Orangeville sits right next to the San Rafael Swell, a massive expanse of red rock country that’s known for its slot canyons, natural arches, and open desert trails that seemingly stretch on into infinity. While you’re here, you can hike, bike, or drive through miles of sandstone formations and winding washes without having the battle the crowds found in the highly trafficked neighboring National Parks.

South of Orangeville, Buckhorn Wash winds through some of the best scenery in the Swell. The road runs between tall cliffs and past panels of rock art that have been there for centuries. If you keep going, you’ll reach The Wedge Overlook which locals call “the Little Grand Canyon”. And it’s easy to see why once you’re standing there.

Located west of Orangeville, Joe’s Valley Reservoir is easy to reach and great for anyone looking to get outside. The lake is stocked for fishing and open to small boats, and climbers will find world-class bouldering areas within minutes of the shoreline. It’s a great pit stop to add to your Southern Utah itinerary.
